Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Tuam Co. Galway
ICS were contracted to design, manufacture and install a joinery package consisting of the full cabinetry for the sacristy area.
We also designed and manufactured the oak and brass cross suspended over the tabernacle stand.
Finally we completed the manufacture and installation of the Ambry Oils cabinet which was designed by Wejchert architects.
This is part of a larger restoration project being undertaken by JJ Rattigan and Conservation Architects Fitzgerald Kavanagh.
The Cathedral was consecrated in 1878 and showcases some of the finest church architecture and historical artefacts in Ireland.

Notredame Cathedral
We at ICS had the honour of crafting a number of the timber candelabra surrounds for Notre Dame Cathedral back in 2014. These specially inscribed pieces are even more special following the devasting fire in April 2019.
St Patricks Cathedral New York
Similar to our timber surrounds crafted for Notre Dame, ICS also designed a number of these surrounds for St Patricks Cathedral in New York.
Chair for the Visit of Pope Francis to Knock
ICS were commissioned to design and manufacture a special chair for the visit of Pope Francis to Knock in 2018.
The Papal chair designed for Pope Francis was purposefully understated and crafted using a combination of maple and walnut. The Papal crest adorns the back of the chair and the Knock shrine symbol is placed on the front. Commenting on the design and what it symbolises, MD for ICS Furniture Gavin Duignan commented, “The brief for the chair was to create an understated modest family kitchen chair. My inspiration for the design was a traditional Irish three-legged stick chair which can often be seen in Ireland and Wales.
The central back panel in maple is shaped to represent Christ in life while the black walnut cross is significant in that he died for us. In this congress of families, the open arms are welcoming, forgiving and loving all in one. From the outset Pope Francis has been a humble man and I felt it important that the chair too would be understated”
The chair is currently displayed in Knock Museum alongside the Papal chair from the visit of Pope John Paul to Ireland in 1979.
Dromod roundabout Outdoor Sculpture
ICS Furniture were delighted to have been given the opportunity to design and craft the new sculpture for the Dromod roundabout on the main N4 Dublin to Sligo route. Installed in 2019 the piece depicts a Herring bird, native to the waters of the Shannon. The sculpture depicts the bird taking flight from the waters and the reeds. All elements from the Ironmongery to the wood were crafted in house.
St Patricks Cathedral Dublin
St Patrick’s Cathedral needed a variety of new furniture that would harmonise with the existing furniture and architectural setting, as well restoration of the lectern.
For this project ICS designed and manufactured:
- Lady Chapel -bespoke altars that echo the gothic architectural detail and the ceiling above
- In the main church we manufactured upholstered and metal-frame chairs
- Restoration of the lectern
- Design of new table
- Music stand for the music director
- Design and manufacture of new music library
- For the cathedral’s education centre, modern educational tools were incorporated in a sympathetic manner so as to sit comfortably within such an iconic building.
